Naturally, a 'champeen' frog and bug catcher like Calvin is
going to try to move up a weight class or two and go for the
ebi (shrimp) catching title as well.
That's a net in his hand. Not to catch the ebi -- that's done
bare-handed -- but to stash the catch temporarily to free the
hand to grab another ebi.

In Gobo, Calvin trains with the
current title holder and all-time best ebi catcher on the Hidaka
River, his cousin, Kouji. |
 |
The first two catches, both by the
reigning champ, Kouji. (The second one is in the upper right
corner.) |
 |
Brian takes a break from swimming
to have a drink and to check out the ebi in the bucket. |
 |
|
A few days before this particular
trip to the river, Kouji had gone to a different spot and caught
this ebi and unagi (river eel)... |
 |
...which grandma Kariya prepared
for that evening's dinner. That unaji was still alive, even after
having its innards removed. Now Steve loves grilled eel, but
when offered at dinner a piece of this particular eel, he had
to pass. |
